Job Overview

Our Norwegian client is seeking an experienced and skilled Chief Mate to join their general cargo vessel's crew. The Chief Mate will be responsible for assisting the Captain in navigating the vessel, overseeing cargo operations, managing crew members, and ensuring the overall safety and efficient operation of the ship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Captain in navigating the vessel, adhering to maritime regulations and safety protocols.
  • Supervise cargo loading, securing, and unloading operations to ensure proper stowage and timely delivery.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of deck crew members, assigning duties and overseeing their performance.
  • Maintain up-to-date nautical charts, publications, and navigation equipment for safe voyage planning.
  • Conduct regular safety drills and training sessions for the crew, ensuring readiness for emergencies.
  • Monitor and maintain the ship's equipment, including life-saving appliances, fire-fighting systems, and communication devices.
  • Collaborate with the engineering department to ensure proper maintenance of the vessel's mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Keep accurate records of voyage activities, cargo operations, crew hours, and incidents in compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in preparing the ship's documentation for port clearances, customs, immigration, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in watchkeeping duties, including navigating, monitoring weather conditions, and overseeing crew activities.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with port authorities, clients, and suppliers during port calls.
  • Mentor and train junior officers and crew members in seamanship, navigation, and safety practices.

Requirements

  • Valid Chief Mate Unlimited Certificate of Competency (COC) issued by a recognized maritime authority.
  • Extensive sea service as a Chief Mate or First Officer on general cargo vessels.
  • Profound knowledge of maritime regulations, navigation, cargo handling, and ship stability.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills to effectively manage a diverse crew.
  • Ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations and ensure the safety of the vessel and crew.
  • Proficiency in using navigation and communication equipment, ECDIS, and electronic charts.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in maintaining vessel records and documentation.
  • Familiarity with ISM, ISPS, and other international maritime safety and security codes.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Must have Schengen Visa. MUST HAVE SCHENGEN VISA.
